Spotlight on Bright Star Orphanage:

The Bright Star Orphanage, located in Toudee Village, Liberia, began in 2014 during the Ebola crisis. The orphanage provided a home for children who had lost their families, but the facilities were extremely limited. The children slept on one-inch foam mats, meals were cooked over an open fire beneath a small thatched shelter, there was no electricity or refrigeration, and there was no dedicated place for the children to gather and eat.

Cooperative Aid committed to improving the orphanage one project at a time. Volunteer construction teams built a new dormitory and replaced the foam mats with bunk beds, creating a safer and more comfortable place for the children to sleep. Medical and dental mission teams also began serving the surrounding communities, donating more than $6,000 in dental equipment and training eight Liberians as dental technicians. Today, four of those technicians continue providing much-needed dental care to people throughout the region.

In 2023, another opportunity arose from an unexpected place. While traveling to Liberia, Cooperative Aid President Michele Wyatt met Clay Crain of APM Terminals on an airplane. After visiting Bright Star Orphanage and seeing the conditions firsthand, APM Terminals partnered with Cooperative Aid to fund the construction of a modern kitchen and dining hall powered by solar power. Completed in February 2024 through an investment of more than $40,000, the new facility provides a safe place to prepare and share meals while also creating new opportunities for the orphanage to support itself through small community services.

What began as a response to the Ebola crisis has grown into a lasting partnership with Bright Star Orphanage. Through the generosity of volunteers, donors, and community partners, Cooperative Aid continues to improve the lives of the children and strengthen the surrounding community.
